Pierre Poilievre's Queer Vocabulary πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Mr. Poilievre's language in yesterday's interview was his way of echoing divisive and discriminatory rhetoric associated with attacks against transgender, non-binary, and other gender-diverse individuals. Many of these folks make up a core base of his supporters, and others use this language in ignorance without knowing its true power to harm, to erase, and to discriminate.

By using this language, Mr. Poilievre, in his leadership position, is setting the example for how others communicate their ignorance and/or their hate. It is important for our community, our allies, and for organizations like PFLAG York Region to continue to hold our elected officials accountable for their words and their actions.

This campaign is intended to be a little tongue-in-cheek as Mr. Poilievre made the ridiculous claim of only being aware of two genders. We know his vocabulary is much stronger than that. But since he claimed ignorance, we're encouraging our community to provide Mr. Poilievre and his deputy Melissa Lantsman, an MIA member of our community, a little lesson in queer vocabulary. Ms. Lantsman has been missing-in-action on the queer advocacy front for a while, and as a member of our community in a high-ranking position in our parliament, could be making an impact. With her voice and leadership sorely missed these last few years, we thought she could use a brush-up on the vocabulary as well.

As we shared with Mr. Poilievre before, language matters. Feigning ignorance on a serious topic is behaviour reserved for children and not someone seeking the top job in Canada.

The Issue

In a television interview on Wednesday Jan 22, Pierre Poilievre was asked about his thoughts on the new gender policy of the United States and answered β€œI’m aware of two”.

Our statement yesterday highlighted how he in fact is aware there are more than two genders and how his claim of ignorance was a veiled form of discrimination, erasure, and harm.

This form a harm is repeated most commonly by individuals choosing to engage in a culture war with the LGBTQ2IA+ community and its allies.

Mr. Poilievre has had many lessons about gender identity in his 20 years of experience in politics. But, to help him out with future interviews, we thought YOU would be more than willing to take the lead and introduce Mr. Poilievre to the many gender identities outside the two he claimed to know. identify outside the cultural binary norms, and their parents, caregivers, friends and allies. 

How to Participate
